KOLKATA: A 22-year-old woman was repeatedly stabbed by her estranged husband, first inside a cafe in Beck Bagan and then on the road outside as she ran out screaming for help on Monday evening.

Locals pounced on the husband and handed him over to police. The woman was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

The husband, Irtiqua Sakib (29), had earlier been arrested on a complaint by wife Aribah Iqbal and was out on bail.

According to witnesses, the couple was in the middle of a heated argument inside the cafe on Nasiruddin Road, when Irtiqua suddenly sprang up and attacked Aribah with a sharp weapon.

Profusely bleeding from a head wound, Aribah ran out but was chased and repeatedly stabbed from behind on the road. Initially taken aback, local people grabbed Irtiqua and disarmed him.

They also beat him up. Karaya police reached the spot and arrested him and took the injured wife to hospital.

Accused asked wife to meet him at cafe for a 'settlement' Aribah Iqbal, who was stabbed by her estranged husband in a Karaya cafe on Monday, was a resident of Topsia's Kohinoor Market area.

The husband, Irtiqua Sakib, told cops he was a resident of Beck Bagan.

The wife had earlier lodged a complaint against him for domestic abuse and assault, for which Irtiqua was arrested.

Cops said Irtiqua had asked her to meet him to reach a "settlement". It was not clear if the talks revolved around withdrawing the case or to make the marriage work. He told cops she refused to hear him out. So, he attacked her.

Cops said the victim's family was informed and a murder complaint filed. The murder weapon was also recovered. Irtiqua will be produced in court on Tuesday.
