The Hammer of Witches
“The Malleus Maleficarum” (“The Hammer of W!tches) written by Dominican monks, Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger, was first published in 1486. It is arguably one of the most infamous books ever written. It served as a guidebook for Inquisitors and was designed to aid them in the identification, prosecution, and dispatching of Witches.
The recommended procedures included torture to effectively obtain confessions and the death penalty as the only sure remedy against the evils of witchcraft. For example:
"The next step of the Judge would be, that, if after being fittingly tortured the Witch refuses to confess the truth, he would have other methods of torture brought before her, and tell her that she will have to endure these if she does not confess. If then she is not induced by terror to confess, the torture will be continued on the second or third day, until she confesses."
