CHEERS REVEALS REAL BAME SHOCK AFTER A MISTAKE ON HER BIRTH CERTIFICATE ABD THIS WJAR HAPPENED

Cher is perhaps one of the most iconic names in the entertainment industry. She is one of the handful of people who has such a unique name, with just one syllable putting the singer and actress in your mind!

However, the singer’s actual name is not Cher but something else. For years, she thought her legal name at birth had been something else until she found out much later that it had been something completely different.

Keep reading to learn more about what Cher found out that changed everything for her.

In her memoir “Cher: The Memoir, Part One,” Cher revealed something that not many, including her, knew for a while. That what she thought was legally her name at birth, ‘Cherilyn,’ was actually nowhere to be found on her birth records.

Cher, 78, revealed a surprising discovery in her memoir: she was officially registered at birth as Cheryl. The revelation came in the late 1970s when she obtained her birth certificate to legally change her name to “Cher.” Confused, she turned to her mother, Georgia Holt, for answers.

Her mother, then 19 at Cher’s birth in 1946, responded with humor: “I was a teenager in pain. Give me a break!” She explained that in a moment of indecision, she borrowed inspiration from Lana Turner’s daughter and suggested “Cherilyn”—but it wasn’t recorded correctly.

By 1979, Cher officially embraced her singular name, dropping all surnames—Sarkisian, LaPiere, Bono, and Allman—to cement her iconic identity and maintain control of her public image.

Cher began her memoir in 2017 but faced challenges being fully honest. “I started at least two, maybe three times,” she told Vogue, “but I thought, ‘If you’re going to write this, you’ve got to tell more.’”

Her dyslexia made the process even tougher, stirring up both joyful and painful memories. “It was really, really difficult,” she admitted. Cher went through three rewrites with different ghostwriters, striving to balance facts with storytelling. “Stories take you someplace,” she said, reflecting on the effort to make her memoir truly connect with readers.

The book’s first part explores her early life, the struggles of childhood, and her whirlwind rise to fame. Family, including her grandmother, helped Cher piece together vivid stories, adding depth to her journey.

Cher remembered her grandmother visiting her one night, bringing with her the high chair she had during her childhood, which had on it an illustration of Bambi. She did this so the two of them could look back at their memories.

The stories her grandmother told her during that particular visit gave Cher the chance to safeguard her childhood memories for her memoir. “I just thought, Oh, my God. I thought, Whatever I feel, I have an audience out there waiting, and I just don’t have time to feel this now. I’ll feel it later,” Cher shared.

With the amount of things Cher has done in her life, it is not surprising her memoir had to be divided into two parts. The first part of the memoir released this month, with the second part due to arrive in 2025!

Cher has always been such an inspiring artist for other women. Share this with other Cher fans so they can also know more about their favorite singer and actress!
