The father-son bond in The Rifleman remains one of the greatest in TV history, even 60 years later.

But beyond its powerful moments, The Rifleman also had its share of little-known mistakes, bloopers, and fun facts that only die-hard fans might notice.

It’s no surprise that cowboy Lucas McCain preferred jeans, but it turns out he was ahead of fashion trends by about half a century! Sharp-eyed viewers might have caught a scene in “End of a Young Gun,” one of the early episodes featuring Michael Landon, where a shirtless Lucas repairs a wagon wheel. You can see a “W” stitched on the back pocket of his jeans, and yes, he’s actually wearing Wranglers. The catch? The series is set in the 1880s, but those jeans didn’t start being produced until the 1940s. More than just a fashion-savvy cowboy, Lucas McCain is a true trendsetter and definitely ahead of his time

Casting the lead in The Rifleman was no small task. Chuck Connors had to outshine 40 other actors, and at first, he turned down the role due to a low salary from ABC. However, fate intervened. After producers took their kids to see Old Yeller, where Connors played a strong father figure, they returned with a better offer that included five percent ownership of the show. Just like that, he was in! Each episode began with Connors showcasing his incredible skills with his saddle-ring carbine, spinning the rifle and firing with precision while locking eyes with the camera.

Lucas McCain’s Winchester rifle was more than a prop; it had a unique history. Though The Rifleman is set in the 1870s and 1880s, it featured the 1892 Winchester rifle, which first appeared in John Wayne’s 1939 film Stagecoach—the same one used by the Duke! The Madera Hotel in North Fork was renamed California House in the pilot episode, “The Sharpshooter,” but the reason remains a mystery. At just three years old, Johnny Crawford auditioned for a role but got blacklisted after refusing to return a chocolate bar during filming with Rosalind Russell
