 The Sandhurst Road School Bombing.

Sandhurst Road School on Wednesday the 20th January 1943 was just another day for this South London School with many of its children having returned from evacuation after the raids of 1940 and 41 had subsided and families wanted to have their kids back with them.

Around midday, a flight of around 60 aircraft , FW190,s and Me109,s arrived over London in a unexpected sneak daylight hit and run raid.

A Lone 190 circled the school around 12.30 and some reports state that the pilot was seen waving at the children in the playground before they where ushered away to take shelter oddly in a reinforced second floor classroom within the school itself. Some children where already inside the main hall having  lunch.

Soon after the aircraft dropped its single 500kg bomb and returned to France. ( the pilot , Hauptmann Heinz Schumann was to be killed in action by November 43)  Some 38 children were killed ( 32 died in the school, 6 later in hospital) and 6 staff with over 60 injured.

Hundreds of volunteers rushed to the scene to uncover the survivors, some scrabbling with bare hands to get to those buried.
