John was a member of the second cohort to be trained as Code Talkers, working together with some of the “First Twenty-Nine” to develop additional code terms. Kinsel was assigned to the 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, where his first stop overseas was for eight months of training in New Zealand. John's first combat experience came during the Battle of Bougainville, followed by the Battle of Guam."

"In February 1945, Kinsel took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he and his regiment landed as reinforcements on D+5. After being injured during battle John was left to wait on the beaches of Iwo Jima for a day before medical evacuation. After the Code Talker Program was declassified, Kinsel was awarded the Purple Heart on April 11, 1989, for wounds he received in action at Iwo Jima on March 2, 1945. In addition he also was awarded the Congressional Silver Medal for his service as a Navajo Code Talker in 2001." - Library of Congress Veterans History Project

"After the war John returned to in Lukachukai, Arizona where he worked as an instructional aide at a school in Chinle, Arizona, about 36 miles from his home in Lukachukai. He often took the journey on foot because of how scarce transportation was. John would make Lukachukai his permanent home as he built a log cabin to house both him and his family."

Rest in peace Mr. Kinsel and thank you for your service. You will not be forgotten.
